As we always do, we welcomed a significant number of new students to the Taunton School community in September.  This is always particularly true in Year 12, this year we welcomed 84 new students into this year’s group.  To help them get to know each other and to form a cohesive group, we invite them to join us on a team-building day during the first week.  As the centre we used previously no longer operates, we went to the Black Rock centre near Bridgwater; who it has to be said did an excellent job!

After a delayed start caused by the M5 being closed, we travelled to the centre in a fleet of minibuses. The students undertook a range of activities throughout the day, all designed to make them work together, improve their communication, and enhance their leadership skills. Raft building was a particular success. Another favourite for many was climbing over a wall that became ever higher, with pupils helping each other over and making sure that no one was left behind. Pupils built devices to transport water, balanced on ropes, transported casualties and tried to find equilibrium on a giant seesaw.  Most enjoyed their day and threw themselves into the activities despite the heat.

Black Rock staff spoke highly of the students and found them to be engaged and willing to learn, which is a credit to them. They felt a need to make activities more difficult to provide some challenge and could see clear evidence of improved communication as the day progressed. The students had an enjoyable day out while representing themselves and the school so well.
