Year 12 Induction: An Exciting Start to Sixth Form
Our new Year 12 students began the academic year with a comprehensive induction programme designed to welcome them into the Sixth Form community and equip them with the skills, knowledge and mindset needed to thrive over the next two years.
Thus the first two days of term were dedicated to a range of induction workshops, focusing on key aspects of Sixth Form life. Students explored topics including the effective and responsible use of artificial intelligence, time management and organisation, planning for future pathways, and the value of co-curricular involvement in developing the skills and experiences sought by universities and employers. Together, these sessions helped establish clear expectations and encouraged students to think carefully about how they can make the most of the opportunities available to them.
The programme also included a collaborative challenge designed to help students build new connections across the year group. In mixed House teams, students took part in ‘The Great Pointless Invention Challenge’ developing innovative product ideas before delivering 60-second elevator pitches to convince their peers to invest. The winning concept, ‘OutPods’, captured the imagination of the audience. The invention proposed headphones that broadcast your music to everyone around you while noise-cancelling technology ensured that you heard absolutely nothing yourself!
Induction has continued throughout the term during weekly tutorial sessions. Working together in their House groups students have reflected on the role they play within the wider school community and considered the values they want to define their year group. The qualities identified most strongly were welcoming, inclusive, diverse, ambitious and exceptional, setting a positive tone for their time in the Sixth Form.
The formal induction programme concluded with a Year 12 Teambuilding Day at Black Rock Activity Centre. Throughout the day, students worked with a wide range of their peers to complete challenges including raft building and a low ropes course. The instructors were particularly impressed by the students’ communication skills, willingness to collaborate and their ability to solve problems effectively under pressure. Most importantly the day highlighted just how well the year group has come together in such a short space of time. Students embraced every opportunity to support one another, step outside their comfort zones and build new friendships. The strong sense of community already developing across the cohort is encouraging, and we look forward to seeing what this talented and ambitious group achieves over the coming years.
