The new academic year has begun with great enthusiasm throughout the cricket programmes. It has been particularly pleasing to welcome our newest cricketers into life at Taunton School. The opening weeks of term have focused on helping players settle into their new environment while introducing them to the expectations, opportunities and philosophy that underpin our cricketing year.

The programme has started with small-group development and assessment sessions. These sessions allow the coaching staff to build a detailed understanding of each player’s current strengths and areas for development, ensuring that support can be tailored to individual needs. By investing time in these early assessments coaches are able to deliver increasingly personalised and technically detailed coaching as the year progresses.

The sessions have also provided an opportunity to introduce players to the cricketing philosophy at Taunton School. At the heart of the programmes is a simple aim: to develop independent cricketers who are able to think for themselves, solve problems and take ownership of their own development both on and off the field.

The engagement shown by players during these opening weeks has been extremely encouraging. Coaches have been impressed by the enthusiasm, willingness to learn and attention to detail demonstrated across all groups. These qualities provide an excellent platform for future improvement as players continue to develop their technical, tactical and mental skills.

As the programme moves into winter training period players will continue to work in both small-group and individualised settings. These sessions are designed to deepen technical understanding, refine skills and help players identify specific areas for growth as they prepare for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Alongside technical development players have also begun reflecting on the previous season and setting goals for the months ahead. A key message throughout these discussions has been the importance of focusing on process rather than outcome. By concentrating on habits, preparation, effort and decision-making players are better positioned to achieve success and sustain long-term improvement.

Mr Sanderson, Director of Cricket, says: “The start of a new academic year is always an exciting time; we welcome new players into the cricket programme and begin building relationships with them, at the same time as welcoming back present pupils. What has impressed me most during these opening weeks has been the players’ practice standard, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn.

Our aim at Taunton School is not simply to develop talented cricketers but to develop independent thinkers who can take ownership of their game and continue improving long after a coaching session has finished. The small-group work allows us to understand each player as an individual and provide personalised support that will help each individual reach their potential.

This season has seen a very positive start and I am looking forward to seeing how the players continue to develop throughout the winter and beyond. It is great that we can now offer the full cricketing opportunities school-wide, across Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior areas.”
