The Music Department was delighted to host Daniel Pailthorpe, co-principal flute of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, for a masterclass with Taunton School woodwind players. Mr Pailthorpe is an internationally renowned musician who performs regularly at the BBC Proms concerts, among many other high-profile appearances and is featured on countless important recordings.

Flute students Emily V, Grace G, Tomisin A and Caleb H were joined by clarinettists Maddie H and Ethan L, each working individually with our guest on their playing technique and all aspects of musical performance.

A wide range of repertoire in different styles was performed, and excellent advice was given on posture, breathing, sound, phrasing, relaxation and communication with the audience. Mr Pailthorpe enjoyed hearing all of the Taunton musicians perform, and there were many gems of musical insight to take away from the session.

Many of our woodwind players will next be heard in a number of events after half term, including the Concerto Competition on 9th November, and the Autumn Concert on 27th November.
