Year 12 Unleash Their Exceptional
From Monday 16th to Friday 20th June, our Year 12 students took part in Exceptional Futures Week, an enriching programme designed to equip them with the skills, confidence and experience needed to thrive beyond the classroom.
In an increasingly competitive and rapidly evolving employment landscape, the ability to identify and develop one’s unique strengths has never been more important. At Taunton School, helping students discover what makes them exceptional lies at the heart of our educational philosophy. Exceptional Futures Week provided a valuable opportunity for students to build on this ethos and prepare for the opportunities and challenges that await them after school.
The programme was carefully designed in response to key insights into future employment trends, focusing on skills identified by the World Economic Forum as increasingly important in the workplace, including creative thinking, systems thinking, social influence, leadership, teamwork, and technology and AI literacy. Teachers from across departments collaborated to create a rich, cross-curricular programme of engaging workshops and experiences, allowing students to explore and develop these skills in a supportive environment before applying them in more challenging, real-world scenarios.
One of the highlights of the week was Creative Day, during which students were deliberately encouraged to step outside their comfort zones. Assigned to unfamiliar areas within the creative and performance arts, students immersed themselves in entirely new experiences, ranging from puppet-making and performance to mock court cases, advert composition, and artistic creation. By embracing the unfamiliar, students were encouraged to view discomfort as an important part of personal growth, resulting in some truly impressive outcomes.
The latter part of the week focused on employability skills and professional development. Earlier in the programme, students applied for one of eight job roles, which formed the basis of a comprehensive mock recruitment process. The culmination of the week saw students take part in realistic interview scenarios, where they met with professional interviewers and were challenged to demonstrate their suitability for their chosen roles. Through both AI-supported and in-person interviews, students gained valuable experience of contemporary recruitment practices while receiving immediate, personalised feedback to help them refine their approach.
Between interviews, students participated in a range of complementary workshops, including sessions delivered by Hult International Business School, a Hinkley Point STEM Workshop, an AI Interview Workshop, and a Presentation Skills Workshop, alongside a professional networking and working lunch. This combination of preparation, practice and reflection enabled students to apply new learning immediately, building both competence and confidence throughout the process.
The involvement of external partners and interviewers added significant authenticity to the experience. Their expertise, encouragement and constructive feedback provided students with invaluable insight into expectations beyond school and helped them prepare effectively for university applications, apprenticeships and future employment opportunities.
To conclude the week, students took part in a memorable enrichment experience of their choice. Some travelled to Wimbleball Lake, where they undertook a series of outdoor teamwork and leadership activities, while others visited the stunning Minack Theatre to watch a live performance of Romeo and Juliet. Both experiences provided an opportunity to celebrate achievements, strengthen relationships and reflect on a rewarding and transformative week.
We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, resilience and professionalism demonstrated by our Year 12 students throughout Exceptional Futures Week. Whether tackling creative challenges, developing future-focused skills, navigating interview scenarios or embracing new experiences, they approached every aspect of the programme with determination and maturity. The skills and confidence they have developed will serve them well as they begin to think more deeply about their futures and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead beyond Taunton School.
We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to all the external partners, workshop leaders and interviewers whose support and expertise helped make the week such a valuable and impactful experience.
