CCF Royal Navy Section’s Exciting Activity Week
Cadets from our CCF Royal Navy Section took part in a highly successful and varied Activity Week this summer, based primarily at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint, Cornwall, alongside a visit to Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.
The week began with a militarisation phase at HMS Raleigh, the home of initial training for all new Royal Navy entrants, both officers and ratings. During this part of the week, cadets experienced elements of Phase 1 training, including the obstacle and assault course, leadership tasks, field gun competitions, and drill practice in preparation for a formal competition. Cadets who are continuing CCF into Year 11 also had the opportunity to take part in damage control training within the Royal Navy’s simulator. This included learning how to respond to onboard emergencies, gaining practical experience using fire hoses and extinguishers.
Other members of the contingent travelled to Devonport, where they either took part in a boat tour of the dockyard to learn about the Navy’s role in shaping Plymouth, or visited the Devonport Heritage Centre to explore the history and development of the site over time.
The militarisation phase concluded with a formal drill competition held in the drill shed at HMS Raleigh. This also marked the end of the week long divisional competition, with Vanguard Division emerging as the overall winners after strong performances across a range of activities.
The second part of the week focused on ‘adventure training’, giving cadets the opportunity to challenge themselves in a variety of environments. Activities included axe throwing, a giant swing and zip line, an inflatable water park, and a gorge scramble along the River Plym. Cadets also climbed to the top of the Dewerstone, where they learned about the local area as well as some of its myths and stories.
Finally, Year 12 cadets took part in a leadership phase at Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth, the home of Royal Navy officer training. They toured the historic college, attempted the Royal Navy swim test, and spent the afternoon completing an archery challenge, which ended in a closely contested final shot competition.
The week provided an excellent opportunity for cadets to develop their confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills while gaining an insight into Royal Navy training. Thank you to all staff who supported the week, and well done to the cadets for their enthusiasm and commitment throughout.
