The annual Instrumental Competition took place on Tuesday 4th November in the Chapel and it produced a fabulous array of high-quality solo performances from the musicians in both the Intermediate and Open categories.

Elsenne (Y13), James (Y9), Dora (Y13) and Frieda (Y12) contested the Intermediate category with highly musical performances which all deeply impressed the visiting adjudicator, Ashley Marshfield. Frieda’s spectacular display of skill on the piano meant that she was announced as the winner of this first category.

The Open category shortly followed, beginning with Matilda’s (Y11) solo violin. Freya (Y12) followed next on the piano, and she also performed again later on the violin. She was not the only performer to play two different instruments, as Maddie (Y12) also impressed the audience on both the oboe and the clarinet.

There were also several pianists who played in this category, including Tim (Y12), Oluwatomisin (Y13) and Jack (Y10). Saba (Y13) also played the French Horn, and she was praised by the adjudicator for her courage to play her piece unaccompanied.

Overall, it was an excellent selection of music, and every performer’s practise had clearly paid off. Maddie was awarded Highly Commended for her performances, particularly for her performance on the oboe, with Ashley Marshfield commenting that she had an excellent tone throughout. Matilda was announced as the winner for her violin performance, with her immense musicality being felt by everyone in attendance.
