Taunton Prep and Taunton Senior Schools welcomed an exciting day of sporting action at the Taunton School Accelerate Pentathlon Hub who were hosting their first-ever South West Schools Biathlon Qualifier. The event brought together an impressive 160 participants from across the South West, including schools from Cornwall and Wales, all competing for the opportunity to secure a place at the National Finals in March.

With 65 pupils representing Taunton Prep and Taunton Senior School there was plenty of home-grown talent on show with pupils demonstrating determination, resilience and fantastic sportsmanship throughout the swimming and running events.

There were some outstanding performances from Taunton Prep pupils across the age groups. In the Year 4 boys’ competition Austin C was the first finisher, with Monty C close behind in second place overall. Guy B also finished first in the swimming event. In the Year 5 boys, Charlie T secured an excellent second place, while Oliver M finished second in the Year 6 boys’ competition. Ben S claimed first place in the Year 8 boys’ category.

The girls also delivered a series of fantastic results. Mila M took first place in the Year 3 girls’ competition, while Millie M finished third in Year 4 and Megan P secured third place in Year 5. In Year 6 Maddie W achieved an impressive second place with Ottilie B finishing third.

The Year 7 girls enjoyed a particularly successful competition with Lydia P taking first place, Aemilia T finishing second and Phoebe D completing the podium in third. In Year 8 Erin W secured first place while Cate P finished third.

The Year 8 girls deserve particular recognition for their efforts as they faced a challenging run and swim against older Year 9–13 competitors, despite competing in a separate category for the overall results. Their performances demonstrated real grit and determination against significantly older athletes.

The day was filled with fun, competitive energy and an inspiring atmosphere with pupils from across the region pushing themselves to achieve their best. It was fantastic to see so many young athletes taking part, supporting one another and embracing the challenge of competing in a biathlon.

As the pupils look ahead to the possibility of qualifying for the National Finals in March the event marks a hugely successful first for Taunton and a proud moment for both schools.

Congratulations to all the competitors and a huge well done to everyone involved in making the first South West Schools Biathlon Qualifier at the Taunton Accelerate Pentathlon Hub such a memorable occasion!
