TPS pupils (together with Mrs Burnett and Mr Woodhall) have begun building their very own Anderson Shelter as part of a new co-curricular club. These shelters were first constructed during WW2 to provide some basic form of protection for ordinary people in Britain during the period known as The Blitz.

The Anderson Shelter was designed to be built in people’s gardens and was basic enough in design for individual families to build them themselves (or with their neighbours). The simple Anderson Shelter is one of the quintessential images of WW2 and lay at the heart of government attempts to protect civilians from aerial bombing and, by 1941, 3.6 million had been built.

As part of the Year 6 History course, pupils have been exploring aspects of the Home Front in Britain in WW2. Therefore, being able to actually build our own shelter here in the School playground truly brings History to life. Building the shelters became an act of defiance and determination for the people of Britain and our build will be based on similar principles: teamwork, determination and a lot of spade-work!
