Staff, Students & Parents Complete Mighty Marathon
If you want to run fast, run alone. If you want to run far, run together.
On a sunny weekend in early May, Taunton Prep School community came together for an extraordinary event: the Mighty Marathon, organised by staff, students and teachers of TPS, but with the initial idea coming from Year 7 student James. From Friday 3rd May to Saturday 4th May 2024, participants ran continuously for 24 hours to raise funds for three worthy causes: the Barnaby Webber Foundation, Alzheimer’s UK, and the Brain Tumour Trust.
The goal was clear: raise money and awareness for these important charities. The Mighty Marathon did just that, generating an impressive £3,385. This sum will be equally divided among the three organisations, with each receiving approximately £1,128 to further their critical work.
Barnaby Webber Foundation: This foundation has two purposes:
The first to provide support and inclusion for young people aged 18 and under who are facing life challenges (be it physical, mental, emotional or social). This may be through other charities, schools or organisations but can also be directly to an individual or family. Secondly the foundation will support grassroots cricket clubs through the provision of essential equipment and items needed to encourage young boys and girls (aged 18 and under) to get involved in playing cricket.
Alzheimer’s UK: Dedicated to supporting individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease through research, advocacy, and support services.
Brain Tumour Trust: Committed to funding research and providing support for those affected by brain tumours.
The marathon began on Friday lunchtime and continued non-stop for 24 hours! Participants, ranging from students, Barney’s and James’ friends and family, teachers to local athletes and community members (arriving at midnight, just to help), showcased their endurance and commitment to the cause. It truly was a very special 24 hours, and we all feel very blessed to have played our part of the experience.
Volunteers from the school and the broader community were indispensable, handling logistics, supporting runners, and keeping motivation levels up. A huge thank you goes to Mrs Sheasby for keeping the fire lit and the energy levels going!
Local businesses (including The Wier Café, Taunton) and individual donors generously sponsored the event, their contributions playing a crucial role in reaching the fundraising goal. The event also received significant media attention, with ITV News interviewing James and Mrs Adcock, and our Instagram account was updated around the clock, highlighting the dedication of the runners and the importance of our TPS community.
The funds raised through the Mighty Marathon will have a lasting impact on the beneficiary charities and we are thrilled to have raised so much. The Barnaby Webber Foundation, Alzheimer’s UK, and the Brain Tumour Trust will be able to continue their essential work, from funding research to providing support services.
