TPS DT pupils have had a fun and busy term completing a whole range of projects, including a number of coasters:

  • Resin coasters designed using computer-aided design (CAD) software and then laser-etching them and filling with resin. 
  • Coasters made from exotic hardwoods which were laminated together and sanded to achieve a smooth, level surface.
  • A coaster which introduced a ‘live edge’ approach, seeing students choose two pieces of timber and fill in the gap between them with resin.
  • And finally, an experimental piece using hydro dipping – a process involving thickening water to allow paint to sit on its surface which can then be marbled.

Pupils also created 3D printed pencil toppers using CAD software before moving on to the more complicated task of printing their own desk tidies!

DT scholars finished off their resin nightlight project this term which was an ambitious task using live edge wood or laminated wood and resin to form a set of fantastic usable nightlights. The process was complex with the formation of a mould which couldn’t leak, before mixing the resin carefully and thoroughly so that it cured.

Once cured the piece had to be carefully cut out of the mould and then sanded using a full range of sandpapers extending to P5000. The pieces were then polished to a mirror shine to allow the LED lights to shine through the resin.
