On Saturday 16th November our Year 7 & 8 Enrichment session welcomed adventurer Miles Barnett who captivated the pupils with an enthralling account of his daring expedition to row across the Atlantic Ocean. Alongside his friend Alan Watson, Miles embarked on this incredible journey on 19th October 2003, and completed it on 10th December 2003, covering a staggering 3,100 miles (5,000 km) in just 52 days.

The Journey

Miles and Alan’s vessel, aptly named “Bright Spark,” was a wooden boat weighing just over one tonne when fully laden. The boat was equipped with a rear cabin for sleeping and storage spaces in the hull and front cabin for all their necessities. They relied on solar power for navigation, communication, and water purification, showcasing their commitment to sustainable energy even in the most challenging conditions.

Daily Life at Sea

The daily routine on “Bright Spark” was gruelling yet meticulously planned. The duo adhered to a strict schedule of rowing for two hours followed by two hours of rest, maintaining this cycle 24 hours a day. This demanding routine allowed them to maximize their progress while ensuring they got some rest, albeit limited to four periods of 90 minutes each, totalling a maximum of six hours of sleep per day.

Nutrition and Maintenance

To sustain their energy levels, Miles and Alan consumed an astonishing 15,000 calories per day. Their diet included freeze-dried food, chocolate, crisps, noodles, pasta, biscuits, and various snacks and sweets to keep their morale high. Maintaining the boat and their own well-being was crucial. They performed regular maintenance on the boat and took care of their personal hygiene, sun protection, and any injuries that occurred.

Challenges and Morale

Miles emphasised the importance of morale and happiness during such an arduous journey. The physical and mental challenges were immense, but their determination and camaraderie helped them persevere. The pupils were particularly fascinated by the stories of how they managed to keep their spirits high despite the relentless ocean and the isolation.

Conclusion

Miles Barnett’s talk was not just about the physical feat of rowing across the Atlantic but also about the resilience, teamwork, and meticulous planning required to achieve such a monumental goal. His story left the pupils inspired and motivated, showing them that with determination and preparation, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.

The session concluded with a lively Q&A, where the pupils eagerly asked Miles about various aspects of his journey, from the technical details of the boat to the personal challenges he faced. It was a memorable and educational experience that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on everyone who attended.
