This month, our budding A-Level Biologists had the opportunity to spend the day exploring the wonders of Exmoor. They immersed themselves in the world of conservation, diving deep into sampling techniques and examining the profound impact humans have on various ecosystems.

The students conducted random sampling in two different locations, which helped them understand how effective management strategies can be in enhancing biodiversity. They also witnessed firsthand what happens when moorland is left unattended and unmanaged.

The group visited some interesting project sites, where they rolled up their sleeves and attempted to manage the habitat, with the goal of reintroducing the enchanting heath fritillary butterfly.

The budding scientists impressed the staff with their remarkable ability to identify woodland species, and they had a blast searching for crabs along the rugged shores of Porlock Weir.

This learning experience not only broadened their scientific knowledge but also ignited their passion for the natural world, leaving them eager to continue their exploration and conservation efforts.
