Marcus Trescothick returns to Taunton School Duties after England’s Test Success
There was a special buzz around the cricket department recently as former England international and Somerset legend Marcus Trescothick returned to work with pupils shortly after guiding England to an impressive 3-0 Test series victory over Pakistan as interim head coach.
Fresh from his success with the England Test side Marcus has spent time coaching and speaking with players across the school’s cricket programmes at prep and senior levels, offering a valuable insight into the standards, preparation and mindset required at the highest level of the game. Having recently overseen England’s unbeaten series performance pupils were able to learn directly from one of the most respected figures in English cricket.
Throughout the sessions Marcus has been sharing his experiences from the international environment, discussing the importance of consistent habits, resilience and attention to detail. For many pupils it was a unique opportunity to work alongside a coach who, earlier in the summer had been helping England secure a comprehensive Test series clean sweep. Marcus’s journey from Somerset and Taunton to international cricket continues to provide a powerful example of what can be achieved through hard work, dedication and a love of the game.
His return continues the strong relationship between Taunton School, Somerset Cricket and the professional game with many pupils aspiring to county and international cricket after hearing first-hand about the demands of elite performance; Marcus is both inspiring and educational.
Director of Cricket Pete Sanderson said:
“Having someone of Marcus’ caliber work with our players is incredibly valuable. What makes Marcus such an outstanding role model is not only his achievements as a player and coach but the humility, work ethic and passion he brings to every session. The boys, girls and coaches (which now includes Lee Cooper) are inspired by his experiences with England but equally by the messages he shared about preparation, continuous improvement and enjoying the game. It was a fantastic opportunity for our players to learn from one of the very best.”
As preparations continue for the winter training programme Marcus’ visits provided a timely reminder that excellence is built upon the daily habits and behaviours that players develop long before they step onto the biggest stages in the sport. For Taunton School’s young cricketers this is a great experience and one that will undoubtedly provide motivation for the months ahead.
