St John’s Concert Recital for Devon and Somerset Air Ambulance
On Friday 10th October talented musicians from the Senior School were invited to perform a lunchtime recital at the beautiful St John’s Church in Taunton. A large audience came to support as students from Years 9 to 12 performed brilliantly. In attendance at the concert was the Mayor of Taunton, Councillor Martin Straus, who was full of praise for the performers, as were the rest of the audience.
The concert began with Matilda (Year 11, Bevan) performing Kreisler’s rousing Praeludium and Allegro on the violin before pianist Jack (Year 10, Evans) performed Chopin’s melancholy Mazurka in A minor. Following this there was a quartet of works by French composers, with Maddie (Year 12, Jenkin) performing Saint-Saëns on the oboe, Saffron (Year 11, Besley) performing Satie’s hypnotising Gnossienne no.1, Freya (Year 12, Bevan) playing Debussy’s Rêverie and finally James (Year 9, Evans) performing Massenet’s lyrical Meditation on the violin.
Following this there was a shift in style as Lewis (Year 11, Goodland) performed Christopher Norton’s jazzy New Kid and Isabella (Year 12, Besley) sung ‘Don’t Rain On My Parade’ from the musical Funny Girl. To round off the occasion, Tim (Year 12, Fairwater) played Chopin’s Etude in C sharp minor known as the ‘Torment’ due to the flurry of notes played by the pianist.
