U15 Cricket Girls Qualify for National Finals at Lord’s
Regionals
The Under 15 girls group, captained by Megan D visited Bristol University for the Regional round of the Lady Taverners Indoor Cup. We adapted quickly to the surface and played a very positive form of cricket. This was led by Grace G who scored runs in every match. This was supplemented in different matches by Jess S, Megan D, Amalie W, Allegra W, Xavia B, Olivia D and Harriet B, they all retired in at least one match.
The group stages went well with wins against Clifton College, Island Free and Godolphin. Josie H adapted brilliantly on the day, her bowling was almost unhittable. She bowled a wicket maiden, this is very difficult in indoor cricket. She was not alone in achieving this feat, as when we played Canford in the final Arabella R calmed Mr Sanderson’s nerves by sealing a comprehensive victory with a wicket maiden! After all this hard work, our students had qualified for the national finals at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
Nationals
The students headed off to Lord’s this week to take part in the national finals and what an achievement, out of 1,950 schools that enter the girls U13 and 15s indoor competitions, we were in the top five! The surface at Lord’s was very different than any we had previously played on and this had effect on our run scoring. In all matches we were short of runs. Despite the surface, Megan, Grace, Xavia and Harriet all got to retirement scores.
The element that the coaches were most proud of, was how we battled to win matches versus the bigger schools. In all four matches we bowled and fielded really well and only lost by a few runs. There was an exceptional catch from Olivia, a great run out by Allegra, Josie making great stop (which hurt) at the back wall and Jess bowling really well after a long layoff. The spirit the girls showed, despite not winning was excellent, and this was epitomised by Arabella. She was so desperate to play, despite carrying an injury, and bowled excellently and I am sure she will remember that she got a wicket at Lord’s. Every girl that played will have a special memory of their achievements at the Home of Cricket and throughout an amazing journey! Well done girls!
